The School of Nursing at Ewha Womans University was the first established nursing education program in South Korea which traces its origin as the Poku-Nyokwan, Chong-Dong district of Seoul in 1903. It was created with the vision of educating and training proficient nurses capable of promoting and facilitating the development of nursing education and practice. In 1947, department of nursing welfare within the Haenglimwon was formed, and in 1950, it began providing education to nursing students in department of nursing education through division of nursing education within the Haenglimwon. Subsequently in 1955, it attained its accreditation as the baccalaureate nursing program, the first such accreditation in South Korea. When it achieved its status as the College of Nursing in 1968, department of clinical nursing and department of public health nursing were established within the college. In 1971, to revitalize and reinvigorate nursing research, Research Institute of Nursing, Ewha Womans University was established. Thereafter in 1996, the name “Department of Nursing, College of Nursing”, was officially changed to the current formal name of “Department of Nursing, College of Health Science” and “Research Institute of Nursing” was officially changed to the current formal name of “Research Institute of Nursing Science.” In 2016, it was reorganized to “College of Nursing”.
